ThinkBDW sets the brief for graphic design students

Leading marketing agency ThinkBDW is supporting the graphic designers of the future through a collaborative project with University Campus Suffolk (UCS) in Ipswich.

Students from the BA (Hons) Graphic Design course were welcomed into the agency’s Colchester headquarters to be given instructions for a major third-year project. This brief was put together by course tutor Russell Walker and ThinkBDW’s Associate Creative Director Dale Hooper, who himself graduated in graphic design at UCS.

Dale explained: “Over the next semester, the students will have to create a brochure for a fictitious property development of their choice and invention. This will give them a practical taste of design agency life, as it’s the kind of work ThinkBDW is renowned for.

“The students will have to sell a lifestyle and a living space within the pages of their brochure, using all the skills they’ve developed over the past two and a half years of their course.”

Russell, who taught Dale and fellow ThinkBDW designer Robbie McWilliams at UCS, explained that the two-month project is an opportunity to gain invaluable skills for the future. “As well as being important currency for their degree, it will be really impressive to employers when the students look for work after graduation.

“This project will also give them the best possible understanding of life in an agency, so it will be less of a shock to the system when they go out into the real world in June.”

Dale and other members of the creative design team at ThinkBDW will judge the students’ efforts at their end-of-year show. The winner will then be offered a prized internship at ThinkBDW.

Student Ed Read, 23, said he was looking forward to getting started on the project. “It’s really exciting,” explained Ed, who has previously done work experience at ThinkBDW. “This brief is taking things up to the next level for us and it’s great to see how things are really done in an agency.”
